80-year-old Joe Biden put his hand on his chest for the Indian national anthem when he had welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on Thursday.
As the Indian anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” started, Biden raised his right hand to his chest, holding it there until he apparently realized the bands were not playing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Biden awkwardly lowered his hand after his mistake.

The White House rolled out the red carpet for Modi, who has served as India’s prime minister since 2014, as part of a state visit to bolster the Washington-New Delhi alliance amid mounting tensions with Russia and China.
The two, joined by about 7,000 guests, were treated to music from the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and a multi-gun salute as they stood shoulder to shoulder on the South Lawn.
Despite the event MC announcing to the crowd that the playing of the Indian anthem would be first, followed by the U.S. anthem, the 80-year-old leader raised his hand to his chest as soon as the music sounded.
