Two Republican lawmakers, State Senator Wendy Rogers and State Representative Mark Finchem, praised the the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade on Friday, the seminal 1973 precedent that largely legalized abortion in the United States.
The court, in a 6–3 ruling, powered by its conservative majority, upheld a Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy and to overturn Roe. Chief Justice John Roberts concurred with the court’s conservatives, but argued he would have upheld the Mississippi law without taking the additional step of erasing the Roe precedent altogether, The Epoch Times reported.
Senator Wendy Rogers reacted on Friday after the ruling was issued, which now gives individual states the power to allow, limit, or ban the practice altogether.
“BREAKING: The SCOTUS has overturned Roe v Wade. President Trump we thank you for appointing great conservative justices and fighting so hard to save the babies!!!!” Rogers tweeted on Friday.
45th President Donald Trump had a major influence on the nation’s highest court. The three Supreme Court justices he appointed – Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – are the most by any president since Ronald Reagan (who appointed four) and the most by any one-term president since Herbert Hoover (though Richard Nixon appointed four in his first four years in office), Pew Research noted.
State Rep. Mark Finchem also weighed in on the High Court’s ruling, writing on Twitter, “It is long past time this nation return to a place where life is valued at conception. The overturning of Roe v. Wade, which was a deceitful legal battle from the very beginning, marks this pivotal & historical time when our nation recognizes the sanctity of life again.”
