During a town hall event Monday morning at Little America Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) spoke to a packed Wyoming Ballroom in support for Republican congressional candidate Harriet Hageman and called out Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) for her role on the January 6 Committee.
Hageman, a Cheyenne attorney, is running against Rep. Liz Cheney in the upcoming primary for Wyoming’s single house seat. Hageman is endorsed by Paul and former President Donald Trump, among various other political figures, Oil City News reported.
During his remarks, Senator Rand Paul said, “I think It’s time we send Liz Cheney back to her home in Virginia.”
“The media wants to know: ‘Is this all about Donald Trump? Is this all about the impeachment?’ Well, some of it is. But it predates Donald Trump … it predates impeachment; it’s about something even more. It’s about the principles our country was founded upon. It’s about the Constitution. It’s about the Bill of Rights,” the Kentucky Senator said of the January 6 Committee.
“Arguably her vote for January 6 committee and her vote to use this enormous and abusive subpoena power on her fellow Republican congressmen is arguably even worse than her vote on impeachment,” he said of Rep. Cheney, who serves as the vice chair on the committee. “This isn’t about fidelity to one person or always agreeing with what Donald Trump’s for.”
“It’s not about me coming to campaign for Harriet thinking she’s going to vote for everything I’m for. We have similarities and philosophies, and that what I trust in. But this isn’t sort of a loyalty test. This is about abuse of power. The national media asked me about January 6. And I could honestly tell you, if this January 6 commission were going after Joe Biden, I would vote against it,” Senator Paul said. Continued Below
“The 4th Amendment says the government can’t listen to your phone calls. The government can’t look at your phone records and your bank records, unless they have probable cause that you’ve committed a crime. And they don’t go to a political group; they go to a judge,” the Kentucky lawmaker said.
“The Constitution was there to protect to protect us, but January 6th is an abomination,” he expressed.
“The January 6th committee — what they’re doing and can possibly do, but this is not the first time. I mean, this goes back to even Liz Cheney to her dad and before, it’s the Patriot Act. It was my father who said, ‘You know what? You’re gonna vote on the Patriot act, you’re gonna say you’re gonna go after terrorists, but it will eventually be used on Americans'”, Senator Paul added.
