Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has had enough of talk surrounding the concept of “precious politicians”, as some lawmakers are trying to find ways to get out of reporting back to Washington in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Gingrich unloaded on Twitter just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi canceled a vote on a resolution that would have allowed proxy voting, or the act of allowing members of Congress to cast votes for other members who can’t be there in person.
As reported by Vox:
After an outcry from Republicans, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi canceled a planned Thursday vote on a resolution to allow remote voting-by-proxy proposed by House Rules Committee Chair Jim McGovern. Had the resolution passed, it would have been an unprecedented change — House rules say that members shall be present to vote — in keeping with the unprecedented challenges of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
On Sunday, Gingrich questioned why members of Congress think they are somehow “more precious” than those who are working through the pandemic, including grocery clerks, law enforcement, truckers, and medical workers.
He then called on the public to call their representatives and demand they “go back to work or resign.” See Below
“Why should members of Congress be more precious than policemen, firemen, grocery clerks, doctors, nurses, truckers, and all the other people who are working through the pandemic,” Newt questioned. “The concept of ‘precious politicians’ is bizarre. If you don”t want to come to Washington resign!”
“There are a lot of courageous citizens who would be glad to replace ‘precious politicians’ and come to Washington,” he added. “Call your House and Senate members and demand they block proxy voting and go back to work or resign!” See Below
