Congressman Elijah Cummings Passes Away At The Age Of 68; Mark Meadows Reacts: ‘I Am Heartbroken, Truly Heartbroken’

Democrat U.S.Representative and committee chairman Elijah Cummings passed away Thursday morning as a result of longstanding health problems, according to a report by The Baltimore Sun.

Cummings was 68 at the time of his death.

A spokeswoman for the Congressman said Cummings passed away at Gilchrist Hospice Care, a Johns Hopkins affiliate, at approximately 2:45 A.M.

“Cummings had not participated in a roll call vote since Sept. 11. His office said recently that he had undergone a medical procedure but the seriousness of his condition had not been known,” according to the report by The Baltimore Sun.

Following news of the passing of Cummings, Dana Bash of CNN quoted Congressman Mark Meadows, who had a close personal relationship to Cummings despite political differences, as saying, “I am heartbroken. Truly heartbroken.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz announced the postponement of a scheduled press conference while giving his sympathies to the congressman from Baltimore.

Gaetz said, “Due to the loss of our dear colleague Chairman Elijah Cummings, today’s previously scheduled press conference has been postponed. Many are in mourning and we hope that peace and comfort can enter the hearts of those who cared for Elijah.”
