2020 Democrat Presidential candidate, Beto O’Rourke, recently disclosed that he and his wife both descended from slave owners.

In an article published by Medium, Beto wrote: “I was recently given documents showing that both Amy and I are descended from people who owned slaves. Along with other possessions listed in their property log were two human beings, Rose and Eliza,” who were owned by Beto’s paternal great-great-great grandfather, Andrew Cowan Jasper, in the mid 1800s.

Beto also revealed that there are records showing his maternal great-great-great grandfather, Frederick Williams, most likely owned slaves around the same time. And his wife Amy, had a a descendent who also had slaves and another who was in the Confederate Army.

With all of this known, Beto discussed how he benefitted from the fortune that was handed down over time from his ancestors, yet people who descended from slaves, like Rosa and Eliza, were not so fortunate.

He suggested that it’s up to the government to make “significant changes,” including reparations to help “repair the damage done.”

Beto’s former rival, Senator Ted Cruz, reacted after seeing the article floating around on social media. See Below

Cruz said, “How many Dem presidentials descended from rich, landed aristocracy? Not my family—Dad was a penniless immigrant from Cuba; Mom was Irish-Italian, first to go to college.”
