On Thursday, CNN’s chief White House correspondent, Jim Acosta, misinterpreted a segment of President Trump’s immigration speech on Twitter and was quickly met with fierce fact-checking.

Speaking in the Rose Garden, the President unveiled immigration reform proposals aimed at increasing the quota for skilled workers.

During his remarks, the President pushed back at some asylum seekers’ abuses of the country’s immigration system. “Our nation has a proud history of affording protection to those fleeing government persecutions. Unfortunately, legitimate asylum seekers are being displaced by those lodging frivolous claims,” he said.

Acosta immediately accused President Trump of portraying all asylum claims as unmerited, misquoting him on Twitter.

Acosta wrote, “Trump in Rose Garden speech paints asylum seekers with broad brush accusing them of misleading immigration authorities at border: “These are frivolous claims.”

President Trump’s 2020 campaign punched back, along with several others, at Acosta’s misquote and called him out for his blatant lie. (Continued Below)

Jim Acosta’s official “fake news” tweet:

Official Trump War Room, managed by Trump’s 2020 campaign punched back:

“You know there’s video proving you’re lying, right?” The campaign wrote, adding that President Trump specifically said, “Our nation has a proud history of affording protection to those fleeing government persecutions. Unfortunately, legitimate asylum seekers are being displaced by those lodging frivolous claims. My plan expedites relief.”
